Living Legends of THE NEW MUSIC
November 7, 2021 marks the birhday anniversary of bassist Lewis James Worrell of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is 87 years old. Mr. Worrell played and recorded with Hank Crawford, the New York Art Quartet, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Roswell Rudd, Robin Kenyatta and Sam Rivers. Worrell has been described as a "unique voice on the bass". This blog post is to acknowledge the following Living Legends of the "Free Jazz" or Avant Garde musical revolution in jazz, focusing on participants from the late 1950s through 1967.
